Short Creek

Occasionally, the Rhythm Aces went out on the town to celebrate our friendship. Here’s a short story about Short Creek.

In the summer of 1996, the Rhythm Aces including Bill, Pam, Gary, Paula, Ellis, Brenda, Fred, and Paulette, decided to take a much needed break from our clogging activities and take a night out on the town to unwind a little. On a Saturday night we all loaded in my van and headed for Short Creek in Caney , Kansas. Short Creek was a huge honky tonk located on the north side on town with a huge hardwood dance floor. That particular night they had a country DJ playing music which worked out well for us as cloggers. A lot of line dancers frequented the place, so dancing in lines was quite common. We found a large table in the back next to the dance floor and settled in with some refreshments.

After a few rounds, Paula was getting a little restless so she asked the DJ to play “Old Time Rock and Roll” and we all got out there and clogged. The crowd looked a little astounded and seemed to be getting into it. They played “Cotton Eyed Joe” and we all got in a small circle inside the big circle and did the clog version. We were having a ball and Paula decided we were going to do a double line dance so she requested a fast one for the dance. The end couple on the double line peeled off and did their thing all the way down the middle. Just about every one in the place was out there dancing with us and the DJ kept it going for about ten minutes. Even our designated driver was having one of the best times ever. This kind of stuff went on all evening. Fred, Gary, Ellis, and I did the Fred Shuffle about three times that night. Each time we did it, about 50 people were behind us doing it with us. By the third time, they were better that we were.

Along about 11PM, Paula and Pam were feeling pretty good so they got up on our table and started dancing. It wasn’t long before the bouncers came over and put a stop to that. I was feeling pretty good myself and might have been acting a little silly.
That’s me perhaps enjoying myself a little too much.

We left about 11:30 PM and headed for Bartlesville. Paula, being the party girl she was, wanted to stop in at the Fountain in Bartlesville before we called it a night, so we closed it down.
