Roaring River State Park

Roaring River State Park

.

Along about 1955 when I was 12, my sister JerrylDine was 13, and my brother Craig was 5, our Dad got a wild hair and bought a camping trailer and he decided to pull it to Sulphur Springs that year. On the way, we camped for 2 days at the Roaring River State Park in Missouri. Here’s the story.

We camped in the Roaring River State Park in my dads new camper. It was a bit tight at night, but most of the time we were out of the trailer so the trip was something different that the family all enjoyed doing.

The camper trailer my Dad bought when I was 12 years old. Our first camping trip was to Roaring River State Park in Missouri. We had a great time camping and catching trout at the park before heading on to Sulphur Springs to complete our vacation.

The park had a large trout hatchery that we went through the first morning we were there. I had never seen that many large trout in the same place at the same time so I was astounded by the place. Seeing all these fish at the same time made me want to go fishing really bad. They told us that they stocked the Roaring River frequently, but there was some very strict fishing zones that you could only use only flies, and others you could only use artificial lures. Well, this was right down our alley as my Dad and I loved to fly fish for trout. The water here was cold, clear, and pristine just like the rivers we fly fished in Colorado. We got the permits necessary to fly fish for trout and headed back to the camp.

Some of the beautiful fly fishing waters we fished on the Roaring River. This place was every bit as good as Colorado without the high altitude. The fishing was great.

We caught a batch of trout on flies and Mom cooked them up on the stove in the trailer along with fried potatoes and we enjoyed them on picnic table under a shade tree at our camping spot. The next morning we caught some more trout and headed for Sulphur Springs to begin our vacation.

There’s nothing better than trout fresh out of the river cooked up by my Mom out at the camp site. Ummmm good.

The Roaring River State Park was just beautiful and a wonderful place to take your family for an outing. I understand it’s still open today and still available for trout fishing.
