Phillips High Study Hall
.
You would think study hall would be the most boring class of all,
But at Phillips High, there was always action in the study hall.
So this poem gives a few examples of what I saw back then,
While attending that study class with my classmates therein..
..
The Phillips High Study Hall where all the action took place.

Phillips High Study Hall
The study hall was held in the high school library with strict rules,
We had to be quiet and sleeping on the desk there was not cool.
Different teachers ran the study hall different days ot the week.
So we were never sure who we would get until we took a peek.
.

.
.
When Mr Shuttlesworth ran the study hall he had a thing he did.
If he saw someone sleeping he would sneak up on that kid.
And drop a huge book on the floor behind him making a boom.
That kid usually jumped out of his chair as did every kid in the room.
.
Mr Shuttlesworth was a very big man. When he dropped a book hard, the whole room shook.

I recall one time when study hall was very still and so quiet there,
When some young man ripped an extremely loud fart to the air.
Vernell Platts got tickled and was just hee hawing so very loud,
Soon everyone in there joined in laughing loud with the crowd.
.
Vernell Platts was a sweet young lady who appreciated a good loud fart.

One day I was in that study hall Bill Vandevere got very mad,
At Larry Porter trying to bully him there which was kind of sad.
They agreed to meet behind the men’s dormitory later to fight.
This was one fight I wanted to see as I knew it would be a sight.
.
.
.
.
So after school I headed to the back of the dormitory to see,
What was going on there that might just be interesting to me.
Bill and Larry were there standing toe to toe yelling at each other.
Larry knocked a chip off of Bills shoulder and they fought one another.
.
.
.
.
They stood there in place and exchanged hard blows to the head,
I honestly thought one of them might end up beat to death.
Untll Larry dropped both his hands and yelled “I’ve had enough.
I was really amazed that both of these guys were so very tough.
.Bill Vandevere was a hard hitting tough young man who earned a lot of respect after that fight.
.
.
.
..
.
They both had swelling and bruising on their faces for weeks,
Bill had established himself as a master fighter with guts at his peak.
No one wanted to mess with him after his powerful fight win.
And I don’t think anyone there ever did mess with him again.

.
On another day at my study hall when Coach Harris was there,
Robert Webb said something smart to him with so much care.
Coach Harris approached him and Robert stood up in his face,
Coach Harris pushed him back and the fight was on at that place.
.
Robert Webb on the left bit off a bit more than he could chew with Coach Harris.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Robert put up a good fight, but the Coach finally knocked him down,
Then he put his arm behind his back and walked him out with a frown.
I heard the next day that Robert had been expelled for a long time,
I don’t think Robert ever did go back to school to get back in line.

.
In that study class, I heard who bombed the upstairs crapper,
And flooded the hallways with a cherry bomb crapper zapper.
A guy said “Tommy Demmings did that deed of very high valor,”
But I never was able to confirm that he should receive the honor.
.
Tommy Demmings did you cherry bomb that upstairs commode?

Although “study hall” tends to sound a little on the boring side.
It was the most interesting class during my long school ride.
With lots of fun action for a peaceful young man just like me.
You never knew what was going to happen next, as you did see.
