Onalaska, Texas

.

This is just a brief visit with my paternal grandparents  in Onalaska, Texas in 1944. I Just recorded this for capturing  the old pictures on the blog so it may be a bit boring to some people.

In 1942, my Dad joined the Navy during World War II. In1944 about 2 years after he joined, he got a leave and took the family to Onalaska, Texas for a two week visit with his Mom and Dad, Lucy and Frank. I have some rather vague memories of the trip, but the photos my Mom took pretty much tell the story, so I won’t waste too many words on the blog. Just follow the captions on the old pictures.

That’s me in my granddad Frank’s arm. JerrylDine is standing by our grandmother, Lucy. My Dad is wearing his Navy uniform as we just arrived for the visit. He has a camel cigarette hanging in his left hand.  My granddad always wore a Stetson and  Kakai pants.  You can see Moms shadow taking the picture.

That’s my granddad Frank standing in front of his house in Onalaska talking to his birddog. All his bird dogs slept under the house. The house was elevated as the area was prone to flooding. The porch looks like it needs a little work. The old house site now sits on the bottom of Lake Livingston.

That’s Frank, Lucy ( holding me), and my Dad enjoying a cool evening breeze sitting in the backyard in Onalaska. My Granddad had some whopper feet. He always said he had a good “under standing” in the world. Dad looks pretty relaxed on his leave.

imageThat’s me enjoying a warm bath out in the back yard. Looks like I had a hold of something with my right hand. Hey, boy, what you got a hold of there. I seem to be in a good mood.

imageThis is is my sister JerrylDine enjoying the sun in the woods near Onalaska. I guess she’s got her arms behind her as I don’t see them anywhere. We all must have been happy on that trip as she looks as happy as can be.

If you look closely at this one you’ll see my Dad in the foreground and my granddad in the background fishing on the bank of a lake near the old house. They are using some of those high tech cane fishing poles. They did catch a lot of fish on that trip.

My Mom holding a large fish she apparently caught on that trip to Onalaska in 1944. Nice socks Mom. Those shoes look like the red slippers from “The Wizard Of Oz”. Try clicking them together Mom.

Now I have recorded this two weeks of my young life for future generations to perhaps enjoy even though I don’t remember too much about it. After looking at the pictures more closely, this is likely pictures from two separate trips to Onalaska in 1944 and 1945.
