Houston Fun
It’s nice to live close enough to very nice big Texas honky tonk way back in the Piney Woods where you can go to relax and have fun occasionally on a Friday night. Pam would get those “Friday Night Blues ” and be ready to go out by the time I got home from work on Friday night. Unlike the song, I was ready to go out too, so we always had a great time. Here’s what we did.
Houston Fun
In 1982, when we lived in Houston, often on Friday, I would call Pam from work and ask her to see if she could get a baby sitter for the evening. If she called me back and said she was able to find one, I would leave work about about 5 PM. With the traffic in Houston moving stop and go all the way out to FM 1960 with a maximum speed of 15 miles per hour, I would pick up a six pack near the office and drink a couple of beers on the way home as it took two hours to get home. This relaxed me and primed me for a fun evening out. When I got home, I got rid of my suit and tie and I took a shower. I put on my Wranglers, my boots, and my Stetson Beaver western hat, and we became Friday night cowboys ready to romp on the dance floor at Virginia City.
Heading for the Honky Tonk to relieve a little stress and have some fun. “Don’t call him a cowboy, until you see him dance.”
We normally went to a large honky tonk called Virginia City which was about 4 miles up the road from our house deep in the Piney Woods. When you drove up, there was a parking area amongst the pine trees. They had a large carriage like wagon pulled by 2 horses that pulled up to your car and picked you up. On Friday nights they had free prime rib with all kinds of fine side dishes, so we ate dinner there. The only kind of beer they served was long necks. I always drank Budweiser. They always had a live band and there was a huge dance floor that we cut a rug on. There was a song that they played there called “Texas Ida Red” that we just loved. ( About 25 years later I wrote Fred and Ellis a clog routine to the song for their show duet. ) Along about midnight, we would be danced out and call it a night.
Our ride to the door when we arrived at Virginia City in the Piney Woods.
Our Texas Honky Tonk of choice. Ready for a longneck beer and some prime rib.
Two stepping the night away in a Texas Honky Tonk. It just don’t get much better than that.
Old Buffalo Bob and Brenda came down to visit us one time and we took them out there to Virginia City with us. After Buffalo had a few of those Texas longnecks, he did some serious Texas two stepping with Brenda. I really didn’t know he had it in him. I believe that’s the first time I ever saw the Buffalo in cowboy boots and a western hat. He looked like he was born in the saddle. If I remember right, Buffalo even did the Cotton Eyed Joe with us. We all enjoyed the evening.
Buffalo and Brenda doing some hot two stepping. Buffalo is pretty light on his feet and just flows across that dance floor. Go Bufflao.!
