They used to make a lot of heavy cast iron gadgets in the past
Those things made of iron were very strong and they did last.
I have found a few to see if you might just remember them too.
I’ll show them for your guess as what they were meant to do.
.
.
I think I can guess about how many items you may just get right.
By your age, my guess is you know the following number by sight.
5 to 15 you will none at all, 15 to 30 may get 3 to 5 of the bunch,
30 to 50 will get 6 of 10, and 50 to 80 will get 8 to 10 by my hunch.
.
.
.
(Now don’t cheat and read before you guess.)

This cast iron fly sat near my grandmother Low’s old gas stove,
She kept wooden matches inside to light her fire and groove,
While she fixed for us the delicious home cooked meals so fine,
So this iron thing is a “cast iron fly match box” most of the time.

This piece of cast iron was in my grandmothers kitchen drawer,
She got it out when she fixed us chicken fried steak with flour.
She would beat that meat with the lumpy side so very hard.
With that “cast iron meat tenderizer” until it was well scarred.

My aunt had a cherry tree out in her back yard in Sulphur Springs,
When she picked cherries she would get out a cast iron thing.
She fed in cherries and the pits were removed so very quick,
With her “cast iron cherry pitter“, to make cherry jelly so thick.

While collecting antiques, a heavy bulldog Pam and I found,
Made of cast iron for her booth that weighed about forty pounds.
We priced that “cast iron bulldog doorstop” at $200 plus tax,
And someone stole that bulldog in a purse, that’s a true fact.

Out In granddads Low’s garage, I found a very old cast iron pot,
It had a brush inside sticking through the lid with a handle on top.
He said it was a “cast iron kerosene smudge pot fire starter”
He used to start a pot bellied stove when he was young and smarter.

I had one of these cast iron pigs when I was a very young boy,
It was kind of heavy, so it wasn’t much fun to play with as a toy,
And at first that old heavy cast iron pig didn’t have any sense,
Until I filled my “cast iron piggy bank” with lots of my cents.

We ran across a cast iron device with a screw, handle, and flat wood,
While making the rounds when we were junking when we could,
The guy told us it was a “cast iron book press” that was old.
I never figured out why they wanted to press books as I was told.

While running the antique circuit, we saw lots of this cast iron item,
There were many different types out there, so people used them,
Quite frequently out in the country on our nations own farms,
This “cast iron dry corn sheller” was powered by your own arm.

This little cast iron chicken and that wire hook were used by women,
That sewed a lot for their families and their very favorite men.
That’s a “cast iron chicken thread spool” they used very long ago.
This was a very tough one even for you old codgers I know.

This little cast Iron lady looks a bit risqué laying there on her back,
It must have been popular as we saw a lot of them on the rack,
As we shopped for Pam’s antique booth when we did that business.
It’s a “cast iron shady lady boot puller” for a Cowboys bliss.
