Fishing Tenkiller Lake

Fishing Tenkiller Lake

.

On our vacation trip to Sulphur Springs one year,
Dad decided to take an overnight fishing trip so fair,
To Tenkiller Lake down south in Oklahoma near there,
I was 7 years old at the time, a happy boy I do swear.

GrandDad Frank had a 5 HP motor, a Johnson Seahorse,
On a board in his garage that we loaded up of course,
Before we headed early that morning to Tenkiller Lake,
We stopped and got the groceries we needed to take.

Granddad Frank gave this old motor to Dad a few years later.

We were having an all men trip to the lake on that day,
Which I loved because my sister always got in my way.
It was my Dad, Granddad Frank, Uncle George and me.
Making this young ambitious fisherman so very happy.

Above is me and Uncle George. Below is Granddad Frank and Dad.

When we got to the lake, we rented an aluminum boat,
Mounted our motor and then put the boat in to float.
The men set up a tent with bedrolls, and air beds,
Ready for us to sleep in when we came back half dead.

We loaded food, water, and fishing gear about 3 PM.
And headed up the lake in the boat with me in a grin.
We rode up the lake for about 1 1/2 hours kind of slow,
Not knowing exactly to where we should really go.

Dad stopped in an area where old trees were showing,
Trying to find where the big crappie were, not knowing.
Soon Granddad caught a big crappie on a white jig,
So we tied up right there putting white jigs on our rigs.

A white jig like we used to catch the crappie.

The crappie were there and we all had a real ball,
Catching those big crappie with no trouble at all.
When they slowed down a little, we moved around,
Fishing until about 7 PM, happy with the fish we found.

As we were starting back to our camp about then,
We hit a tree branch and resulting in sheared a pin.
The spare pins were in the tackle box back at camp,
So Dad got on the oars trying not to get a cramp.

.

It took 3 hours to row us back down the lake,
So it got so very dark while that trip we did make.
We lit a lantern and we cleaned all of those fish then,
Then laid down and went off to sleep with our kin.

Dad fixed breakfast the next morning that was so fine,
Granddad had some dough balls of his own special kind.
So he fished there on the bank catching a 10 pound carp,
That was a giant fish that to me looked so very sharp.

About noon, we loaded up and headed back home,
After completing that big adventure we had on the roam.
I actually got a little scared in the boat that night.
But fortunately for us, everything did turn out alright.

Message:

If  your’re a young man on an adventure with Dad,
Things may not go well when the problems are bad,
But don’t worry, old Dad will always save the day,
Making your adventure mostly fun and good play.
