Finding Your Ego
Do you have an ego? Do you know what it is? 1 thought about it for a while and believe I figured out what my inner ego has been.
Finding Your Ego
An egoist is defined as “one devoted to ones own personal advancement.” Let’s face it by this definition nearly everyone out there in the world today is an egoist. We all seek to be the best that we can be and if we don’t promote ourselves, who will? Always remember that it’s the squeaking wheel that gets the grease, so we must try to promote ourselves whenever we can.
The ego has been defined as “the part of you that defines itself as a personality, separates itself from the outside world, and considers itself a separate entity from the rest of nature.” For me I think my ego was my ability to solve difficult problems as an engineer. So in my case I guess this separated me from the rest of the world. As it turns out, promoting my inner ego also promoted my career with Phillips. I think this is the type of inner ego that not only promotes ones self, but also brings the big raises and allows you to keep your job when 30% of the engineers were laid off. So I guess my ego was synergistic with my career. If the problems are solved my ego is promoted and my career is promoted. My ego therefore, has worked well for me.
Take care as you promote your ego or you may end up in deep water.
Egotistical is defined as “one who has become so ultimately consumed by their ego, that their entire view of the world and everyone in it is twisted. They usually perceive themselves as ‘God’s Gift to Women or are just plain sick as well as cocky.” Well I don’t think I was ever egotistical as for a portion of my career I let other people take credit for work that I did. Those guys inner ego was taking credit for other people’s work and they generally were the ones that were thinned out when the layoffs occurred. Some of them were indeed sick and cocky.
So here’s the deal, you can make your ego fit your needs but you must be very careful how you do it. It must be defined as something that will truly promote you in others eyes as well as your own. So find your ego, but make it a very controlled effort. Clark Kent selected his inner ego to be a superman which worked as well for him. But you must be sure that you have all the tools necessary to make your ego work for you or you will certainly fail.
No sweat Clark, your superman ego has all the tools he needs to make this work.
