Fibrillation

Fibrillation

.

I went to the doctor for a routine check up and found out I was fibrillating. Here’s the story.

Fibrillation

.

About two weeks ago, I went to my family doctor for a check in so I can continue to get renewals on my medications. My doctor was out, but her PA (physicians assistant) ran me through the regular tests. She said I had a very irregular heart beat and decided to have an EKG test run on my heart. She came back and said the bottom of my heart was out of sync with the top of my heart causing the irregular beat. She made me an appointment with a cardiologist the next week.

.

The cardiologist checked me over and ran an EKG and told me I had a condition called Atrial Fibrillation. The bottom of the heart beats and the top of the heart just kind of quivers and there is not much blood flow in the very top area which can allow a blood clot to form in the top area of the heart. He said the condition can be corrected by shocking the heart momentarily stopping it so it restarts in sync but they need to check for clots first to be sure a clot is not injected into the blood to my brain causing a stroke when the top of my heart starts pumping correctly. He changed my medications and scheduled me for a test to determine whether or not a clot had formed in my heart.

.

The test consisted of a sonic camera they stick down your throat to check take an audio picture of the heart to check for clots. While I was waiting for the doctor to come and run the test, Pam, Kristi and Tamara were in the room cheering me up. They had given me something to relax me and I was feeling kind of goofy. Tamara put on a little Ernest Tubb’s “Waltz Across Texas” then “Pass The Booze”. She said “oh I can clog to that” and did some advanced clogging right there in the hospital room. Then we started fooling around and here’s the result.

Well ladies if I don’t make it through this one, it’s been a pleasure having you as family.

The doctor came in and they put me out and stuck the device down my throat and completed the procedure. He said he saw the tiniest spec in the top of my heart that may or may not be a clot. So to be safe they did not shock my heart that day. So I am to keep taking a special blood thinner to dissolve any possible clot and in five weeks start a medication to correct the atrial fibrillation. I go back to get shocked in six weeks if the condition is not yet corrected by the meds. The doctor did say my heart looks healthy so that was good news.

.

For about three days after the test, my throat has been really sore, so the tube they put down my throat must have been a whopper.
