Favorite Movies
I spent a little time and thought about my favorite movies of all time.. After I had a rough list, I went back through them and picked out five I thought were the very best. Here’s the results of my survey.
Favorite Movies
.
After I picked my five favorite movies of all time, I went back through them and found that they all had the following in common:
1. They were all released within a twenty year time period from 1978 to 1997.
2. They were all about real life stories that could have really taken place with no science fiction or supernatural activities involved.
3. The acting in all the movies was superb.
4. Three of the five included scenes with soldiers in Viet Nam.
5. In each one, I had the feeling I was living the part of the main character as the movie progressed feeling his pains and joys right along with him.
So here are my five best liked movies of all time.
.
Forest Gump 1997
Forest Gump’s life pretty much paralleled mine in time and I was intimately familiar with all the the historical events dramatized in the movie. I felt like I was right there with him as the movie progressed. The experiences of Forest Gump in his life involved many complex characters and relationships and dramatized his his deep love for his Jenny. This movie really moved me.

Good Will Hunting 1997
This movie dramatized a super genius bad boy that had read books about everything and knew virtually everything one could derive from books. He got into trouble with the law and is bailed out by a college professor that is interested in his math skills providing the professor gets the young man some psycriatric help. He learns from a personal relationship with his psychiatrist that he has a lot of knowledge, but he has not yet experienced life and the real joys that come along with it. This was a fairly low budget movie that delivers a big message.
.
The Deer Hunter 1978
.This movie is a complex story of some good friends whose friendship is interrupted by the some of the friends going to the Viet Nam War together including being captured and tortured by the Viet Cong. Mental problems resulting from the torture eventually results in the death of one of the friends which was very hard on the remaining friends. The story was very complex and dramatic and I thoroughly enjoyed the movie.
Dances With Wolves 1990
.In this movie, a U S army officer from the old west is assigned to man a post deep in Indian territory alone. Over a period of time, he becomes friends with the Indians and he becomes familiar with their ways and falls in love with an Indian girl from the tribe. The story follows their life together on the frontier and their trials with enemy Indian tribes, the buffalo, and the army soldiers that arrest the officer for treason. This movie was special as we had the benefit of hearing all of the army officers thoughts as the movie progressed.
.
Apocalypse Now 1979
In Vietnam in 1970, an Army Captain takes a perilous and increasingly hallucinatory journey upriver to find a rogue Colonel, a once-promising officer who has reportedly gone completely mad. In the company of a Navy patrol boat filled with street-smart kids, a surfing-obsessed Air Cavalry officer, and a crazed freelance photographer, the Captain travels further and further into the heart of darkness. We have the benefit of hearing the Captain’s thoughts during this movie also. It was a very exiting movie which I enjoyed very much. I too spent a year in Viet Nam in 1970.
