Expo 67 Trip

Expo 67 Trip

.
Way back, I wrote a little story about a trip to the World’s Fair.
Since then, I’ve found pictures documenting our time there.
I thought I’d put the story in poem form just to challenge me.
And get more pictures out there for interested parties to see.

In June of 1967, Rick and I and a guy named John took a vacation.
We all three graduated college in May, 1966 and found our vocation
John, who we called “Puss” in college, got a degree in chemistry.
Rick and I were Mechanical Engineers looking for our destiny.

By June 1967, we all had vacation coming and were still single,
We decided to go see Expo 67 in Montreal, Canada, and mingle.
We had read that Expo 67 may be the best ever World’s Fair.
So we all three made plans on exactly how we would meet there.

Rick and I flew from Amarillo into Newark, New Jersey one day.
John drove over from Connecticut and picked us up to go play.
We all drove to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and saw the ocean,
It was my very first time to see the great Atlantic’s majestic motion.

We saw the famous Plymouth Rock where the pilgrims landed,
But it was a little disappointing and I wondered if they were stranded,
As that little small rock didn’t look big enough to moor a vessel.
But it did have a fence around it making it look kind of special.

We found a restaurant that served that famous Cape Cod lobster.
And we each picked out a big one to be served up on a platter.
That was the first time I had eaten that fine white lobster meat.
I loved that lobster dipped in hot butter as it was oh so sweet.

We all headed for Hartford, Connecticut, to John’s home there,
And we all three spent the night there in his nice place so fair.
The next morning we drove up to Montreal together as one,
To go to Expo 67 Worlds Fair so we could all have some fun.

We walked for miles the next few days seeing all that was there,
We looked through all of the Pavilions from countries everywhere.
The exhibits were fantastic and futuristic, a real sight for us to see,
This was the experience of a lifetime for Rick, John, and me.

All around the Fair, many man made canals were built there,
We rode the special boats all around the grounds there at the fair.
We also rode on trams that ran overhead with great views of things,
We enjoyed everything there feeling a lot like three young kings.

On our last day there, we stopped at a caricature artists stand,
He whipped out a caricature of each of us in minutes per man,
He asked each of us what we liked to do, and I said I like to fish,
For 5 bucks, he drew me fishing in a small round gold fish dish.

We were just three young men that thought we knew it all then,
Not knowing what our future lives would bring for three friends.
We had a lot of living and learning to do before we got through,
But that experience on our own got us all started off so true.
