Digging Deeper

Digging Deeper

.

That old trunk that we started digging in yesterday,
Has a lot more treasures inside we uncovered today,
So we’re digging deeper to see just what’s in there,
I think we will uncover more memories like my old bear.

The old truck itself belonged to Pam’s Dad all his life,
He kept his stuff in there through good times and strife.
When Bill Barringer passed away, Pam got his trunk,
Now it is used for our treasures that you may call junk.

We found two old pictures in oval frames as we dug around.
Paintings were inside of the curved glasses we found.
The US Capitol Building and Statue of Liberty looked fine,
I think they hung in grandmother’s house a long time.

Pam’s Mother, Ruby Evelyn, knitted Pam things to wear,
There was a red sweater and a blue jacket in there.
Pam remembers wearing them a lot as a young girl,
Her Mom was a talented lady during her time in this world.

There was more of my old toys down on one side,
My Duncan Bo Yo was there as was the Top I gave a ride.
I found my TV- Radio that still played music so good.
Jiminy Cricket was down in the trunk bottom of wood.

Some of my toy hand guns were there from the old days,
One gun was a derringer that I did easily hide away,
I had a loud cap hand grenade that I threw all around,
And my Johnny Appleseed book was in there I found.

My old crane was in there too, still looking so very fine,
I played with that crane for hours and hours at a time.
I could actually dig with the crane and pile up dirt,
Without getting any of the dirt on my little tee shirt.

We found a sack in there that said report cards and awards,
Inside was a big pile of reports for our girls and I was floored,
Pam kept them all from kindergarten through college.
A lifetime of report cards shows the pride that she had.

Also Inside was a Harlem Globe Trotters program book,
From 1964 when I went to give them a long look.
Several of the Trotters signed the cover way back then.
Recently my daughter Kristi’s family went to see them again.

There was also an ashtray I made myself in 1965,
At the Texas Tech Engineers Annual Show that did jive.
I left it at home and I guess Mom put it in my old toys,
She always seemed to think about me as her little boy.

There’s still some stuff left in that old trunk so big,
We will finish and get to the bottom then do a little jig,
And then put it all back until we forget what’s in there,
Then we will go through it all again having more fun, I swear.
