Cutsie

Dogs often become beloved members of the family. Here’s a short story about a member of our family named Cutsie.

Cutsie

About the summer of the year 2000, Pam and I decided we wanted to get a dog to keep us company. We weren’t traveling much anymore and our girls were gone from home, so we started looking for a Shih Tzu (Shit Sue) dog. We found an advertisement in a local newspaper for Shih Tzu’s for sale in Dewy, Oklahoma for $75, and went to check them out. Pam went in and came back out in 10 minutes with a tiny white ball off fur with brown ears and small brown spots. She had picked a female dog that was the runt of the litter. The guy said that will be $125 please, and we showed him the paper advertisement and he let us have her for $75 even if the paper made a mistake. She had registration papers with her.

Her fur was the softest I have ever touched and it was love at first sight. Now we had to decide what to name her. Pam kept saying ….”she’s so cute” so we gave her the first name “Cutsie”. She had one pink eye and one black eye that looked like a shiner so her middle name became “Shiner”. We noticed her tail kind of kept beat to the music like an orchestra leader so we gave her the last name “Bach”. We registered her as “Cutsie Shiner Bach” and she became a member of our family.

We have had her for 14 years now, and she has become set in her ways. When the weather is nice she goes out to eat lunch with us. After we eat, we stop by Arby’s and get her a roast beef sandwich with a water and she has the beef without the bread. She has a bed in our den and every morning when she’s ready to go out, she comes to the side of our bed and barks once in a low tone. If no one responds in a minute or so, she barks one more time in a low tone, if no one responds then, she barks twice in a loud bark. This usually gets her out to potty. When we’re going to be gone for a while, we spread some absorbent towels on the floor of the bathroom and she always goes in there to potty. In the evening, we are usually in the den working our iPads or watching television. Cutsie will come to the front of my recliner and bark once loud. I pick her up and she lays between my legs on the recliner the rest of the evening until we go to bed. She’s learned to enjoy the recliner as much as I do. She has become member of our family and she loves our grandchildren dearly.

We love that little dog and hope she will be with us another 10 years or so. She has become set in her ways just like the rest of us old codgers so she’s a little stubborn sometimes, but we understand each other. If we leave her over night, she is so happy to see me when we get back that she jumps into my chair and kisses me on the ears for about 5 minutes. She actually talks to me when all this is going on.
