Bo Jangles

.

I’ve always loved all the dogs our families have owned,
But there was an exception for one dog we have known.
This poem is about Bo Jangles, the dog with no brain,
This dog never did anything but cause me serious pain.

Bo Jangles

.

We moved from Fritch to Oklahoma City in December, 1978,
The day we drove down there was a terrible ice storm that date,
We wondered if this might be an omen relating to our move,
But things got better and in the big city we did begin to groove.

.

In 1981, Kristi was seven and Tamara was just four years old.
We had a dog named Monet that was mature and a little cold.
The girls asked if we could get a new puppy and make their day,
So they would have a pet with which they would be able to play.

.

Pam and I decided that it might not be a bad idea to have a pet,
So we started watching the papers to see what we could get.
We found an add for registered Cocker Spaniel pups for sale.
The pups were weened and listed at $150 each for the males.

.

The girls went to look and fell in love with a special young puppy.
He was a male gold and white Cocker Spaniel, a real little softy.
We brought the fluffy ball of fur home to live with all of us there,
And the girls named him Bo Jangles and the ordeal began here.

.

Bo Jangles whined loudly 24 hours a day for the first whole week.
When he finally stopped that, he drove our dog Monet up the creek.
He chased her and annoyed her until she was just fighting mad,
But she wasn’t big enough to stop him with the tools she had.

.

After a month, he had grown a lot and house broken he was not.
And he chewed up two pairs of my dress shoes making me hot.
So we made him a backyard dog, with no more house access.
And I told him if he didn’t straighten up, I would kick his white ass.

.

I had a nice garden out in the back yard that I pampered so,
The first day out there he dug it all up and destroyed it you know.
We took everything out of the backyard he could tear to shreds,
And left him out there to romp and grow up playing with the kids.

.

When Bo Jangles grew up he would knock both our girls down,
Each time they went in the backyard, making them cry and frown.
I decided this crazy dog must have a brain about the size of a pea,
Since we could not teach him one thing, he just could not see.

.

When winter came along, I made him a dog door to the garage.
This stupid dog would crap in the garage instead of in the yard,
Smelling up the area where he slept making a mess to clean up.
He also pulled out all my camping gear and chewed in all up.

.

This was the last straw and I ran an ad for a free registered dog.
Someone came and got our dog that was as hard headed as a log.
I can honestly say this is the only dog that I never got attached to.
I was never ever able to teach this dumb dog a thing as he grew..
