Bear Claw Necklace

Bear Claw Necklace

I wonder how many people in today’s world own a real bear claw necklace. It so happens that I do and here’s my story.

Bear Claw Necklace

One year not too long after I married Pam in the early 1970s, my Mom asked me what I wanted for Christmas that year. She always asked me in the spring of the year so she could look all year long to find me an exceptional present. On that particular year Pam and I were deep into Square Dancing and it was very fashionable for the man to wear neck ware to the Square Dances. So I told my Mom, I would like to have a bear claw necklace for Christmas present that year. I was always her favorite child even though she wouldn’t admit it. When we were up at my parents cabin at South Fork, Colorado, for the summer that year, my Mom told me she had found the perfect Christmas present for me at a little shop in Creede, Colorado. I thought she had found me some kind of nice fashionable neck ware that I could wear to the square dances and be a stylin’, so I told her thanks and I couldn’t wait for Christmas.

That year when Christmas rolled around, we were in Texas opening our presents and I picked up one present in a small package that was very heavy for its size. I opened it up and inside was this men’s necklace with solid silver oblong beads and turquoise stones. There were 6 real bear claws about am inch and a half long partially encased in silver hanging around the perimeter. There was also a elk horn root slice with a picture of a bear head hand engraved on it. I was flabbergasted and I noticed she had left the price sticker on the back of it which said $595. I told my Mom and Dad they had spent too much on my Present and they just responded that we love you and wanted you to look nice.

I wore that bear claw necklace to all our special events while we square danced in Borger and I was the talk of the do si doers. We got out of square dancing for a few years and when I got back in, mens neck ware was no longer in style. So every once in a while, I wore it out Honky Tonkin just to show it off a little.

I doubt that it’s even legal to own a bear claw necklace today, but since mine was purchased in the early 1970s, it’s probably grandfathered so I will pass it on to my children when I go to that big hunting ground in the sky.
