The Bachelor House

Bachelor House

.
From November 1967 to November 1968, my buddies and I lived in a bachelor house in Phillips, Texas. We sowed a few wild oats in those single years. The featured pictured is Monroe and I in the living room of our bachelor house in Phillips in our bikini underwear. We probably had had quite a few beers and were getting ready to go out when Bob took the picture. This is, I believe, the only picture I have from that year. I assure you that we were just good friends and nothing more..

In 1967, my roommate Bob and I had lived in an apartment in Borger for about a year. We had both bought Honda 305 scrambler motorcycles and had to chain them to the stair case at night. The neighbors were complaining about the noise and inconvenience so we looked around and found an old company house in Phillips that we could rent for about half what we were paying for the apartment. We scrounged around and found some old furniture and rented the old house. As it turned out, the house was about 50 yards from Bob’s Mom and Dads house and four blocks from my Mom and Dads House in Phillips. Every Sunday we went and had dinner with and visited with our respective parents. The house came with a detached garage where we kept our scramblers locked up and a drive way to park our cars off the street. The place wasn’t fancy or nice, but it was great for two single guys not too interested in impressing anyone

We had a long divan that was comfortable to lay on which became a third bed most of the time. We also had a good stereo system and a good collection of LPs to listen to. Our icebox was well stocked with beer and peanut butter. First Rocky moved in with us and stayed about 6 months sleeping on the couch until he got drafted into the army. The later Monroe moved in for about 6 months and stayed until he moved to Houston. The place kind of reminded me of a bare bones living area that we mostly just slept at.

On the weekends, Bob and I were tearing up the back country around Phillips running hills and sand at Dixon Creek with our scramblers or I was fishing somewhere with my dad. During the week we spend a lot of time drinking beer at some of the local night spots around Borger including Jean’s Bar and Grill, the Rendezvous Room, the Captains Gig, the Playhouse, the Oasis the Jolly Pig, the Country Club, the River bars, and a few more I can’t remember the names of. We played a lot of pool and got pretty good at it.

.
I can remember Monroe and I went into the Pizza Hut on Cedar Street on a Thursday evening for a few beers and we were talking to lady that was drawing beer. She told us the record for two men drinking beer in there was twenty four beers. We had had about 6 apiece and we took the challenge and we drank twenty eight beers that night to set the new record. We called Bob to come and pick us up as we were in no shape to drive. I mean to tell you Friday was a rough day at work.

.
We had a lot of good times living in that old beat up house in Phillips working hard during the day and playing hard on the week ends and evenings. I received notice that I had been drafted into the army and I began a six week program of running and exercising to get into shape. On November 8, 1968, I was inducted into the Army of the United States of America

.
Within six months, Bob has gotten married and settled down to a long happy life with his wife Jackie. I heard that Rocky had moved to Seattle, Washington, and gotten married and settled down. Monroe was living in Houston in a rent free place under an apartment building.

.
When I got out of the Army, all my running buddies were out of circulation and I began thinking of finding a wife and settling down also.
