A Walk In The Woods
My grandsons Luke and Zack occasionally like a bedtime story,
So I prepared this poem for them with both suspense and glory.
Try reading it to your grandsons when they get fairly tall.
I’m sure they will be able enjoy it then, and understand it all.
A Walk In The Woods
.
It was Halloween night as the fog had set in making things eerie,
There was a full moon that night so bright making it real scary.
As I walked in the woods with my German Shepard namedĀ Silver,
Wondering if there were any creatures wanting to eat my liver.

Walking through the foggy shadows cast by that big full moon,
I felt a cold wind causing chills to run down my spine real soon.
Silver was disturbed too as I heard a low growl deep in his throat.
The wind made a low howl so I pulled up the collar on my coat.

As we moved along, I got the feeling something evil was watching,
With red glowing eyes that I conjured up in my mind as walking.
I was so glad I had Silver along by my side there in those woods,
Ready to protect me just like any good German Shepard should.

Suddenly I heard something moving through the woods close by,
Silver’s ears were perked up high listening standing by my side.
There were branches breaking and loud thumping foot sounds,
My hair was standing up as it got closer making my heart pound.
.
.
.
..
Sliver was barking loud now as the thundering thing was nearing,
I turned and ran as fast as I could heading for a small clearing.
I turned my head around to see what I could see behind me.
There were huge sharp horns on a big Longhorn Bull I did see.

I had on a red coat in the light of that bright moon that night.
That had agitated that huge bull running loose ready to fight.
I could see smoke blowing out his nostrils on that cool evening,
As he got closer behind me as my speed he was exceeding.

I was getting tired and was only going to get slower and slower,
So I yelled out to Silver to “sic em boy” back over my shoulder.
I could tell that Silver had heard me as he ran towards the bull,
So he went right for that bull after turning on his speed to full.
.

..
.
My dog Silver was at his heels nipping at his legs as he did run,
Trying to trip that giant Longhorn Bull up that weighed a full ton.
Then Silver saw that huge pair of bull balls hanging back there,
And jumped up and gave them a powerful bite with much care.

That big bull let out a bellow like I have never ever heard before,
Then rared up and stopped looking back behind him as he roared.
He then turned and started chasing Silver looking so very mad,
So I just stopped and waited watching them as they ran, so glad.

I knew that Silver could run circles around that big old longhorn,
So I just walked on home at a slow pace as my body was worn.
When I got home, I looked around, and on the porch Silver stood.
I cooked him a big steak for saving my life back in the woods.
