Jitterbug

 

Anyone out there know what a Jitterbug is? Well you’re about to find out. My Dad and brother and I used them at lakes all over Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. That’s right it’s a fishing lure. Perhaps the finest surface running lure ever made.

Jitterbug

The Jitterbug runs on top of the water and wiggles back and forth like something swimming on the surface. As you reel it in, it makes a fairly loud sound that sounds like bloop, bloop, bloop, bloop….. As it moves through the water attracting the attention of the big bass lurking below looking for something to eat. I first started using the Jitterbug when I was 8 years old, so I know the lure has been around for at least 66 years. The lure has a big metal lip up front, a fat oval shaped body and two treble hooks.

 

Jitterbug lure we used to catch Large Mouth Bass when the surface of the water was fairly smooth.

We always loved using this lure above any other because the bass usually came from deep water to the surface and when they busted the lure, they usually came a foot or two out of the water making the strike very exciting for the fishermen.

Over the years we caught a lot of bass on this particular lure. The only drawback was that you needed a fairly still surface with not too many ripples for the lure to be effective in drawing up the bass.,if there were too many ripples, we went to large spinners or Lazy Ike lures which worked sub surface.

 

 The Lazy Ike lure we used when the surface of the water was too rough for top water lures.

 

 

 

As my brotder, Craig, or my Dad would also tell you, there was nothing better than being knee deep in water on the Cayuga Flatts at Grand Lake fishing a Jitterbug in and around the willow scrubs sticking out of the water, and having a 5 pound Large Mouth Bass come up and bust that Jitterbug. It kind of gives me chills just thinking about it. The featured photo gives an artists rendition of the big bass hitting the Jitterbug.
