Fun Things
In the mid 1950s to early 1960s, fun things to do were often passed between classmates at school. Again I am not proud of some of these, but “boys will be boys.” This story documents a few of the things we all tried at least once.
Fun Things
Stomp The Bag
One of the group would crap in a paper sack. The sack was placed on a concrete porch step that had no danger of catching fire. The sack was lit on fire while someone rang the doorbell. The home owner would almost always come out and stomp the sack with his shoe and the crap would fly everywhere.
Change The Lock
At the Phillips Camp, all the houses had a detached garage with them. The garages were constructed of Structural steel and tin in groups of four. Often the owners would leave locks on the garages in the unlocked position. When we were walking home from school, we would often take the open locks and exchange them with another garage and then lock them. I know we caused the garage owners a lot of misery.
Cinnamon Toothpicks
Cinnamon toothpicks were the cool thing to have in school. You could by a bottle of liquid cinnamon at the drug store that about 30 toothpicks would fit right in. You could pull one out and get a burst of flavor in your mouth for a long time. I took a bottle to school with me one day and I accidentally spilled the bottle of cinnamon on my desk. The strong smell made the teacher sick and we got out of school early that day.
Fads
Fads were the in thing when I was in high school. First we all bought us a boat necked shirt, next we went to Ivy League hats, then it was peroxided hair, then it was Mohawk haircuts and finally it was sex curls. I had all but the Mohawk haircut which was a little to radical for me.
