Toon Influences

Since I have a problem with pain in the back of my right hand,
I’m writing less and drawing Bighead toons when i can.
Perhaps it will be fun to determine what brings them to mind,
As they pop out to be born so quickly as a thought I do find.

I thought of a movie that I had once seen of aliens as coneheads,
Which seemed like a good Bighead toon idea as I laid in bed.
There was also the kid we called egghead down on Stark street,
That also fed this thought as my ink pen and the pad did meet.

My old Pappy was a fisherman like no other I ever did know,
He smoked those Camel cigarettes fast as up I did grow,
He nearly always caught the biggest fish of our family group,
This Bighead toon was surely influenced by his memory too.

As a young man, I often played that sandlot baseball so fun,
Sometimes I even hit a long ball that ended up being a home run.
Those fun times we had way back in the good old days,
Led my drawing hand to make the Bighead turn out this way.

I sometimes think about the grim reaper as I continue to age,
I guess this thought brought an image to my mind in a rage.
As the thought of my life being over just chaps my old ass.
This Bighead toon came to life while that bad feeling did last.

As a young boy, I always had a yo yo in my pocket for play,
I went “around the world” with that yo yo many times in a day.
It’s a good memory that comes to me fairly often at this stage,
So I drew up this Bighead toon to put that memory on a page.

In my old age, I’ve grown a little fatter than I ever used to be,
Every morning in the mirror, this additional fat meat I get to see,
So seeing this image nearly everyday when I get out of bed,
Makes it easy to draw a tubby Bighead toon from my head.

When I was in high school, I was often called a big old nerd,
At lunch time, I often played volley ball with all the nerd herd.
So it was quite easy to visualize the toon as it represents me,
Back when I was kind of nerdy for all the other studs to tease.

At Texas Tech College many many moons ago in the far past,
I attended all the school football games as long as they did last.
You might say I was a hardcore football fan at that time,
So I captured that Bighead toon right here in this rhyme.

Perhaps the best friend that I ever had in my whole life long,
Was an avid skier named Dale with a love for all so very strong,
He passed away after a day on Breckenridge slopes one time,
His loving memory remains strong in the depths of my mind.

The American Indians always intrigued me in my younger years,
Now they are getting their revenge with the Casinos, I fear,
As they take all our money as they rarely now let us win,
So this Bighead toon shows us ready to be scalped again.

As a young man, I loved to go see those John Wayne movies,
He was our hero catching all the bad guys which was groovy,
I even named a good friend of mine Duke back in those days,
This Bighead toon is dedicated to a great cowboy, I do now say.

I learned how to blow a cow horn and really make it bellow,
Being kind of a wild young man and a scruffy looking fellow.
I guess my own activities influenced me quite a bit back then.
As it shows up in my Bighead toons showing where I’ve been.

In the army in Vietnam, I knew a guy that became my friend,
He was kind of rough looking and stayed in my hootch then,
He loved to blow smoke out of his nose when he smoked,
This Bighead toon was influenced by this big Texas cowpoke.

I have a nephew that was in the U. S. Navy not too long ago,
My Dad was also in the Navy during WW II, this I do know.
The influences are great to draw a cool Navy man on my pad,
This one is my nephew Nick, but I still think a lot about my Dad.

I learned to sit on my helmet when I flew in planes in Vietnam,
To prevent getting shot in the ass flying over the heavy jungle,
By VC shooters took shots as the planes did fly right over,
This Bighead toon could be me with a big chip on my shoulder.

Remember when we were kids and that first snow did fly,
We got out and rolled up a big old snowman, a real fat guy.
Then gave him a face and slipped out a carrot for a nose.
This Bighead toon is based on that memory that just arose.

Every evening in the army when we heard taps being played,
We knew it was time to hit our dorm and then hit the hay.
In the morning the bugler played reveille when the sun arose,
This Bighead toon shows the army bugler in a profile pose.

In South America they use the Bola to catch animals so neat,
Three weights on strings are thrown to entangle animal feet.
I saw a documentary demonstrating this special hunting skill,
So I drew up a Bighead toon from an old memory there still.

There’s a guy called big foot who has has hair all over him,
That they even made a few movies about way back when.
Everyone knows this haity guy from all the wild stories and tales,
Here’s my own Bighead toon version on a lot smaller scale.

My grandson, Zack, has become a real big time lizard chaser,
He catches them and let’s them go as he’s not a lizard eraser.
I think because Zack loves the lizard so much at his young age,
I conjured up this Bighead lizard toon for him on this pad page.

Now you see what has influenced Bighead toons I did draw,
They just fly right out of my mind at my own beckoned call.
As long as it entertains me in my geezer years right now,
I’ll keep doodling Bighead toons along until in come the cows.
