The Fall

The Fall

Sometimes a simple thing like flipping a light switch on can save you a lot of misery and expense. As we grow older, we tend to think we can still do the things we could always do. This is simply not the case. So all you seniors out there be safe. Here’s my story today.

The Fall

It was early February, 2010, and Pam and I were getting ready to go out and eat. The car was parked in front of the house and it was 7 PM at night. I had gone out first to warm up the car and had noticed it was pitch black outside. I had moved the car up to the sidewalk and was waiting for Pam. I looked towards the house and saw Cutsie (our Shih Tzu dog) sniffing around. I opened the car door and called Cutsie to get in the car. I could see she was still on her leash and was hung up on something so she couldn’t get in. So I got out of the car and walked towards the house. After a few steps I could see Pam laying face down next to the sidewalk. She was laying on the leash. I got down on my knees next to her and rolled her over. Her face was all bloody and it appeared she wasn’t breathing so I began giving her CPR. After a few minutes she pushed me off and said “ Get the hell off of me!” I thought..”Whew, she’s back.” So Pam got to her feet mumbling something about her face hurting. I tried to get up but couldn’t. After about five minutes of tugging on me, she finally managed to pull me up. We looked her over and found she had hit her face and head pretty hard on the sidewalk so we decided to take her to the Emergency Room and have her checked. She had apparently tripped as she came off the front porch and landed square on her face on the sidewalk. Pam was OK and we both survived the ordeal until we got the ER bill. Then we both had to have CPR. If either one of us would have turned on the porch light, this situation would have never happened.

As we gradually age, our old wrinkled bodies just aren’t as flexible and agile as they once were. We should strive to be more careful as we go about our normal activities. Sometimes just a small slip can result in weeks of misery. Remind yourself daily to be extra safe and you will surely be rewarded.
