Fishing For Trout

Fishing For Trout

One of the things I learned to do very well in my time
Was fishing for trout in mountainous areas oh so fine.
This poem visits some of my methods and techniques,
I used to catch this fine sport fish with all their mystique.

Fishing For Trout

My favorite way to fish for trout was with the dry fly,
We used dry flies floating on the ripples in the river.
The “Mosquito” and “Humpy” dry flies worked the best,
Wading knee deep fishing upstream without any rest,

We fly fished in the evening when the bugs started flying
The trout began rising and hit our flies, I am not a lying.
In no time, we had a limit of Brown Trout, on our stringer.
This time out on the river was a “Natural High” bringer.

.
We spinner fished the rivers and streams a lot for sure
Panther Martin and Rooster Tail spinners are the best lures.
We threw them across upstream at a 60 degree angle,
Reeling them back in fast to prevent hanging or tangles.

We started rafting the Rio Grande river in the later years,
And figured out that the best fishing water was right there.
So we started throwing spinners off the raft on the trip,
And limited out each time with those moving spinner flips.

When I took my girls to fish the small streams with me,
We used a fly rod with a hook and salmon egg gently
Flipped upstream of a deep hole hiding behind a tree.
I hooked them and the girls pulled them in very happily.

.
Occasionally, I fished with my wife’s Dad named Bill,
Who preferred lake fishing on the bank sitting still.
This was not my favorite way to catch trout I say,
But PoPo just dearly loved fishing for them in that way.

We used corn and salmon eggs at the mountain lakes.
A rod, a tiny hook, a split shot and a bobber is all it takes
To catch those trout sitting on that Colorado lake shore.

It takes a while to get a limit, so bring some beer for sure.

When you see that bobber begin to dip up and down,
Pick up the rod, and reel in the line slack you found,
Then flick the tip of your rod real hard to stick the trout,
And reel him in fighting hard, a big fish there is no doubt.

.
We had access to a boat and motor for a few years,
So we trolled the mountain lakes that were very near.
We used long flasher rigs to attract the trout to our lure.
Riding the boat trolling is for the lazy fisherman for sure.

.

We fished for trout in just about every conceivable way,
Any type fishing was good as it all seemed like fun play,
We love our Colorado summers and memories we made,
And thank God for the great outdoors where we all played.
