Veterans Honor Day

Veterans Honor Day

.

A while back my granddaughter Sarah did then request,
That I come to a school meeting to honor the very best,
Veterans that were relatives of the Lynn Wood students,
And I told her I would be there on that day to attend.

.

On November 10, 2017, we got up early feeling fine,
And headed over to our daughters house right on time.
We picked up Kristi and headed to Lynn Wood School,
The students were heading for the gym looking cool.

.

I had worn my Vietnam Veteran cap on the way in there,
And I saluted the kindergardners in the hall as they did stare.
A few of the girls saluted me back wearing a big smile,
Making this veteran kind of proud to be there in style.

.

We went into the gym and sat down in folding chairs,
On the back row behind students sitting on the floor there.
I looked on the stage and I could see Sarah with a smile,
Sitting with other students to present the show in a while.

The principal held up five fingers to silence the crowd,
He said “we are honoring veterans as we are proud,
Of their service protecting our country in the past.”
He thanked veterans as did all students from the class.

As the show went on, relative veterans pictures did flash,
On a big screen above the stage from far in the past.
I looked up and saw me flash by and then my Dad too,
Sarah made sure we were there in the honored few.

These are our two pictures that were shown on that screen above the stage.

.

The students all sang a few patriotic songs for us all.
Like “My Country Tis Of Thee” and “America” so tall.
I got some chills running up my neck and back then,
As I listened to the kids sing those songs once again.

.

The show on the stage started then as pairs did perform.
Telling American History and Veterans Stories so warm.
Sarah and her friend did a great job with their part,
Making this veteran so very proud of all the great art.

Then the students were advised to go find their veteran,
And stand by the side of that proud honorable man.
Sarah came and stood there by my side as they sang,
A final patriotic song as the whole room with music rang.

Sarah then took me by the hand and led me on along,
To the front of the room where the stars stood so strong,
So the PTA could take a picture of us together there,
Making old Veterans so proud of our students so fair.

We moved over just a little bit to shoot some more,
And took a couple of shots there on the gym floor.
The one where I saluted with Sarah looking up at me.
Was my favorite picture that was taken of the three.

Shots Pam and Kristi took after the PTA shot.

Sarah went to class and Kristi, Pam, and I went to eat,
At Broken Arrow White River Fish Market so sweet.
Then Pam and I headed for Frisco just after lunch.
To celebrate Zack’s birthday with all the Wirz bunch.

Happy Birthday Zack.
