Traveling In 1948

.

When we went on vacation to Sulphur Springs in 1948,
We traveled the highways starting early not late.
It was Dad, Mom, JerrylDine and myself at that time.
I will describe a little of our trip that comes to my mind
.

.

We left home on Stark Street in Phillips at day light,
In our 1946 Ford 4 door sedan all packed up tight,
JerryDine and I sat in the backseat with pillows between,
To keep us separated as I fought a little with the queen.

I get to sit behind Mom. No you don’t that’s my place.

.

We slept another hour as down the road we did go,
The speed limit then was 50 mph which was slow,
And Dad always toed the line and never did speed,
As he took good care of his family he loved, indeed.

Dad took state highway 33 across Oklahoma then,
Through Cushing, Kingfisher, and Tulsa as we went.
We saw those strung out Burma Shave signs on the road,
That Mom read to us for fun to pass the time as we rode.

Mom, how fast is a mile a minute?

.

We always went to Sulphur Springs in the summer,
So we had all the windows down, what a bummer,
We couldn’t communicate without yelling out loud,
And our hair whipped around as if we were in a storm cloud.

.

The only stops we made along the way was to get fuel,
And emergency stops to pee by the road in a pool.
Mom always made lunch that she carried in the car,
We all started eating before we got down the road far.

How much further is in now?

.

Mom always fixed the same lunch for all our trips,
She fixed ham and pimento cheese sandwiches with chips,
She brought red apples and a jug of ice water too.
We had an eating routine that we always went through.

There’s no more ham sandwiches, Mom?

.

We would always eat all of the ham sandwiches first,
As us kids thought the pimento cheese was the worst.
Unfortunately, it was Moms favorite she made every time.
So we ate as our last choice as we drove down the line.

.
JerrylDine and I played a game as we rode in the car,
Spotting the white horses in the fields way off afar.
Whoever saw the most in the period we did play,
Was the winner of the game on that particular day.

White horse, white horse, that one’s mine .

.

In those days, there were lots of Billboards on the highway.
That were fun to look at because the art was so gay,
They kind of remind me now of Rockwell’s fine art.
As I took another quick look as this blog I did start.

Dad, can we stop and get a Coke?

.

I don’t think I really enjoyed those long trips on the way,
Especially pimento cheese sandwiches on that day.
But I did enjoy recalling my memories of the trip,
And writing it down as I again did ride on that ship.
