The Grand Years

The Grand Years

.

.
There are a few places out in the world that provide great fun.
We keep going back all of our lives and we never ever are done,
Because we have enjoyed them over the years with family,
One place this poem reviews is the Grand Lake O’ Cherokees.

In 1952, I made my first Grand fishing trip with Dad and Granddad too
To King’s Point on Grand Lake O’ The Cherokees with rods of bamboo.
It was in a heated dock and the large black crappie were really a biting.
I learned how to catch them and just loved that crappie hard fighting.

Later about 1957, we started fishing Cayuga Flats on Grand Lake.
With top water plugs we called the Jitterbug looking real, not fake,
Those large mouth bass would bust the lures with a very loud splash,
Craig, Dad, and I wading, had the time of our life reeling them in fast.

In 1959, we fished below Grand Lake dam after they let water out.
Fish of all kinds got trapped in the small pools with out any doubt.
We caught all species of fish just about on every cast in there,
It was
about the best fishing that we had ever found anywhere.

In 1986, we had trips with the Mickey Mouse Gang.to Grand Lake.
We went to check out the Pelicans as they showed up there late.
The girls did their jump in the lake with our very close friend Dale,
In October when the water was so cold, but they did it without fail.

In 1992, a Mickey Mouse Gang reunion on Grand Lake was there.
At John and Sue’s cabin on a deck overlooking the lake so fair.
We rode the Cherokee Queen out to the middle to a spot so near
To the July 4th fireworks that we watched with our friends so dear.

In 1995, we got a pontoon boat with Rhythm Aces on Grand Lake,
We rode it over the lake and grilled burgers as that boat did shake.
We rode inner tubes getting enemas from the fast water inrush.
And drank ice cold beers having fun with our group so flush.

In 1998, we spent our Friday’s at the Cowskin Prairie at Grand Lake,
Two stepping there while relaxing with a few beers and crab cakes.
We spent the night there and went fishing at the lake the next day.
Often we went antiquing at Grove too before we went on our way.

In 2006, we met our family at Lee’s Resort on Grand lake at last.
We had our only grandchild with us and he caught a big white bass.
We cooked all our meals having great family fun there all together
Having much fun spending the weekend there loving each other.

In 2013, we met again in at a motel in Grove with all four grandkids,
We hit the fishing dock at Indian Hills on Grand Lake so well hid.
I got to give my grandchildren some pointers on catching those fish.
Having the time of my life there in that dock, what more could I wish.

Grand Lake has provided much entertainment for me and my family.
Over a span of 61 years, they have had lots of thrills there with me.
I guess Grand Lake will be there for a few hundred more years,
To provide great times for future generations as they are reared.
