The Funny Papers

I saw a cartoon that reminded me of old times so meek.
When we got a Sunday newspaper delivered every week.
Inside were those funny papers in living color that I read,
As I thought, a few of my favorites popped into my head.

Alley Oop was a comic strip that was one of my favorites,
He had a club and rode a dinosaur always ready to fight.
I always wondered what happened to both of his ears,
Perhaps a big T Rex bit them off when he got too near.

Blondie was a strip I read about the Bumstead family.
Dagwood and the kids and their friendly dog, Daisy.
Always were getting into trouble just living life so free,
There was Mr Dithers in there too for everyone to see.

Li’l Abner was a hill billy we often found laying in the hay.
He had a pig pal and chased a beauty named Daisy Mae.
He lived near Dogpatch, USA, with a laid back life style,
That we all envied after reading the comic strip for a while.

Dick Tracy was a detective with a square nose and hat,
That chased guys with very strange names that were bad.
He has a two way radio watch that seemed futuristic then,
But now is surely obsolete stuff from the past once again.

Beetle Bailey was a soldier always trying to get out of work,
The Sarge tried to catch him goofing off like a real dork.
Beetle always seemed to be able to give old Sarge the slip,
But sometimes his good buddies gave the Sarge a big tip.

Popeye was a strip that I read every week way back then,
He ate that spinach for a big burst of strength to often win,
Olive Oyl from his bad opponent Bluto in the big fist fight,
I tried spinach one time, but my muscles were still so light.

Little Orphan Annie lived with her big Daddy Warbucks,
After he adopted her when she was so down on her luck.
Orphan Annie and her beloved dog that she called Sandy,
Had lots of adventures that us kids thought was dandy.

Mutt and Jeff were a couple of old men kind of like Dad,
Dad liked this old guy comic strip much better than I did.
I think I was too young to understand all that went on.
But I read it anyway because my Dad laughed at this one.

Nancy was a strip about a black headed girl on the go.
She had adventures with her tough guy friend, Sluggo.
They did things in the neighborhood like you and me,
Right there in that Nancy comic strip for us all to see.

My sister JerrylDine and I tried to get to the paper first,
Sunday morning as for those funny papers we had a thirst.
It was cool to read the funny papers before my older sister,
Because I could see how it just made her insides fester.
