South Fork Of The Rio Grande

South Fork Of The Rio Grande

At the small town of South Fork, Colorado, so dandy,
Is the point where the South Fork of the Rio Grande,
And the mighty Rio Grande River do run right together,
Making the mighty Rio Grande River so much bigger.

South Fork Of The Rio Grande

The South Fork branch follows Wolf Creek pass highway,
Down the mountain so cold and clear where we did play.
When we drove up the pass, there were very good spaces,
To park and walk down to the river to fish at great places.

Back then they stocked rainbow trout there once a month,
So there was always good fishing all along the river front.
When we had good luck there on the South Fork River,
We would go there every day with a hot fishing fever.

There was a place I took my daughter Kristi that I knew
That was hidden from the highway and out of all view.
I taught her how to catch trout that day in that stream,
We called the South Fork while living a real live dream.

Kristi caught lots of trout on our Daddy Daughter outing.
That we both recall so vividly, of this there is no doubting.
Everything was perfect fishing the South Fork together,
I hope this story is never forgotten by our family, forever.

There was one spot we stopped with a bridge right there,
Where Dad, My brother Craig, and I fished with much care.
The water was spread out and quiet on top at that spot,
Perfect for floating dry flys down slowly on the water top.

There was nothing better than seeing a trout grab that fly,
And then feeling fly rod tension after a second went by.
It gave us such a thrill with every trout that we caught,
Carefully playing them very slowly so they didn’t get off.

Another favorite spot had deep blue pools in the big rocks,
You could drop a big worm in there and get quite a shock,
As there were some big Brown Trout that hung in there,
That were a challenge to land when hooked, I do swear.

Down stream of those blue holes was a fast moving ripple,
Where we threw Panther Martin spinners so very simple.
We threw them up and across the South Fork River there,
Reeling them in very fast, waiting for a hard strike to snare.

Those trout hit the spinners so very hard as they did strike.
They ran downstream and grabbed the spinner fast like,
Then turned upstream, bending that spinning rod down.
I enjoyed fishing that pristine River that our family found.

When hooked, the trout would run downstream real fast,
And get in fast water doubling the rod tension with a blast,
You had to ease up and reel slower to bring them home.
Recalling those fishing trips still excites my old bones.
