Houston

Houston

.

When we transferred to Houston, we thought we would be happy,
But the traffic there was horrendous and the people were snappy.
This poem describes some of the good and the bad while there.
After a while there, we were ready to go away to most anywhere.

Houston

.

In 1981, I was promoted again and to Houston we did go.
We searched around and bought a home we loved so.
It was a big two story house with the girls both upstairs
In North Houston deep in the piney woods, oh so fair.

.

Preston Wood Forest was the name of our nice subdivision,
We had our own school and swimming pool within our vision.
It was a great family living area to bring up our two daughters.
So we settled in and made friends with some of our neighbors.

.

Kristi and Tamara were now eight and five years of age,
They attended open concept school which was the new rage.
They both loved the school and their very special teachers
Who worked hard to be sure they were all student reachers.

.

My work was downtown where the traffic was the very worst,
So when I drove to or from my office, I often would curse.
If I left home at 5:30 AM, I would get there by 7 AM for sure,
If I waited until 6 AM, It took until 8:30 AM with traffic to endure.

.

On the way home from work the traffic just could not be missed.
So I endured it going home and at the other drivers I was pissed.
Often in the stop and go traffic, I would drink a couple of beers
Just to relax me some and keep me from crying real tears.

.

I loved to go on field trips North of the City to miss all the traffic
Because I could drive full speed all time and it felt so terrific.
So I went on field trips to the North probably more than I should,
But most of the gas field action was there and it worked out good.

.

For everything you did in Houston, you had to stand in a line.
It reminded me of the Army, not a real favorite time of mine.
Go to a movie or go out to eat, there was always an hour wait.
This part of the fast moving Houston life, I did grow to hate.

.

Just North of our home about 5 miles, was a big Honky Tonk bar.
It was Virginia City located back deep in the pines not too far.
Friday nights, we put on our western wear and hit the dance floor.
They had free prime rib because as they wanted you drink some more.

.

We did a lot of two stepping on their giant hardwood dance floor
While enjoying the live country music bands they contracted for.
It was a very fun country place for being way back in the boonies
With fine country people, away from the crazies and the looneys.

.

While we lived in Houston we were hit by Alisha the hurricane.
We were a long ways from the coast but we lost trees in the rain.
The power was out in our Preston Wood area for a full week.
It was August so to keep cool, Star Wars movies we did seek.

.

I never really considered our time in Houston as being alive,
By the time I got kind of used to it, to Odessa we had to drive.
I thought that I might like working in Odessa quite a bit better.
But after a year and a half, I requested a transfer by letter.
