Carrizo Springs

Carrizo Springs

.

When we lived in Houston, I got a phone call one day,
It was Mike and my cousin Kristi over Carrizo Springs way.
They invited us to their home to visit and hunt deer there,
So we said that sounds great, we’re gathering our gear.

(We must have left our camera at home as I could find no trip pictures)

Carrizo Springs, Texas, is southwest of San Antonio a ways,
Very near to the Mexico border where the coyotes do play.
Mike was the superintendent of the high school down there.
I believe Kristi was the student advisor who did so care.

We headed out from Houston about noon on a Friday,
Enjoying the scenery as we drove on down for our stay.
We arrived at their home late in the evening that night,
With our two young girls, Kristi and Tamara so slight.

The girls hit it off fine with Emily, Sarah, and John Scott,
Who they knew from Colorado in past summers so hot.
We appreciated Mike and Kristi’s hospitality back then,
Sharing their fine home as we stayed there with them.

Mike and I got up before daylight on Saturday morning,
And headed to Mike’s places for White Tail Deer hunting.
Mike spotted me in a 20 foot high wooden deer stand.
And headed on out to his stand hoping a deer to lan

Along about 7AM, I saw a deer about 200 feet from me,
But he was running full speed there among mesquite trees.
I just didn’t have time to get the cross hairs fixed on him,
Before he was out of sight and gone in the mesquite limbs.

We stayed there until about 11 AM with no deer to show,
And went and grabbed some lunch in town on the roll.
Mike stopped at a liquor store an picked up a bottle
And took a couple of chugs before hitting the throttle.

The ladies and all the kids went over into Mexico to shop,
To get big vanilla, rum, and other stuff on their stops.
Pam really loved the trip and the girls both loved it too.
It’s the first time Pam was ever out of the USA, it’s true.

Mike dropped me off at a tall deer stand another place,
I sat there an hour, and I heard movement at a slow pace.
I got ready to shoot when I saw movement just below me.
A huge Bob Cat walked out right below for me to see.

He stopped out front and looked back, then ran on away,
Such a wonderful experience that was on that hunting day.
Mike picked me up sometime in late afternoon to head in,
He had worked that bottle down a little more by then.

When we got back at the house, dinner was then ready,
Kristi hollered a bit at Mike as he was just a little unsteady,
Then we ate that wonderful meal that she had prepared,
And visited for a while just loving all our great time there.

We left Sunday morning after having a very fine breakfast
Thanking Kristi and Mike for a wonderful two days past.
We headed back to Houston passing a grapefruit grove,
And stopped then to buy a bushel as by them we drove.

We enjoyed those Grapefruit for a month or so.
