Canton Lake

Many times when Buffalo Bob got the itch to get away for a little while, he would plan a trip and then call Pam and I to see if we could join him and Brenda and get away for a while. If we didn’t already have plans, we would usually join them on the outing. This story is about a camping trip we took to Canton Lake.

Canton Lake

One Monday evening, we got a call from Buffalo Bob asking Pam and I if we wanted to meet him and Brenda at Canton Lake in western Oklahoma for a weekend Camping trip. Buffalo said he was bringing his camping trailer which slept four, so we should plan to sleep in their camper. We thought about it for two minutes and since both our girls were away at OSU going to college at the time, we told him we would meet him at the camp site he had selected on Friday afternoon. Buffalo told us he was bringing his grill, so I told him we would bring the steaks and groceries for the trip.

On the way from Bartlesville, Pam and I stopped at a supermarket in Enid, Oklahoma, and had the butcher cut us four Porterhouse Steaks 1 inch thick and we put them on ice for Saturday. We also picked up groceries and a case of Bud Light beer. By the time we arrived at the campsite on Canton Lake, Buffalo already had the camp trailer set up in place and ready for us.

The Camp Site we were in on Canton Lake. As I recall we were parked down close to the far end of the site.

During the week before, I had recorded us 5 New Compact Discs called “Raw Honkytonk” for us to listen to on the trip. We built a camp fire and got into the ice cold Bud Light Beer. We turned on the portable jukebox and cranked up the honkytonk music. The beer was going down good and we kept easing the volume up on the jukebox. After a while, a lady from the campsite down the road headed our way and we thought she was going to ask us to turn down the music, but instead she said she loved the music and wondered if she could borrow the CDs for a few minutes so she could get a copy of them for her dad. So we said sure and cranked the music a little louder.

We all enjoyed the great outdoors. We’re fixing to fire up that portable jukebox and play some good old Raw honkytonk music as we chug a few beers.

Buffalo cooked up one of his wonderful breakfasts with the sour dough biscuits that was fantastic to start our day on Saturday. I went fishing after breakfast and caught several crappie and white bass which I cleaned. Buffalo said he wanted to take the fish home, so he put them in the refrigerator freezer in the camper. We decided to grill the steaks for lunch so we put on baked potatoes in the camper and fired up the grill. The steaks were melt in your mouth good with baked potatoes and corn on the cob.

Buffalo got a good scald on those porterhouse steaks that turned out to be mouth watering good.

After that fantastic lunch, we headed for Clinton, Oklahoma, and spent a couple of hours in the casino there making our donations to the Indians. We had supper at a fine restaurant there and headed back to the camp site at Canton Lake. It was one of many memorable outings we enjoyed with the Buffalo and Brenda. The wonderful memories we made with the Buffalo will remain etched in our minds forever.

We were down in Borger visiting Buffalo and Brenda about six week later and I asked the Buffalo if they ate the fish he brought home from our outing. He got the strangest look on his face and picked up his keys and walked out the door. It seems he had turned off the electricity to the camper when he got home and forgot to take the fish out of the freezer. He said the smell about knocked him down when he opened the door.

Yes Bill, I do remember that awful rotten fish smell that hit me in the face that day I opened the camper door.
