Candy Bars Back Then

Candy Bars Back Then

.

Back when I was a whipper snapper cute as I could be,
I loved candy bars my Mom and Dad often bought for me.
I have compiled a list of my favorite at age 6 to 8 for you,
In this story poem to see If you may agree with me too.

As I recall, most candy bars cost 5 cents back at that time,
And they were much bigger then which made them so fine.
I guess it is just a way of the world we live in for this trend,
To make products smaller and then charge more for them.

Candy Bars Back Then

.

As a boy, my Mom used to bring me a Cherry Mash to eat,
That to me was so very good tasting and was so very sweet.
I’ve seen them recently, but they are about 1/4 of the size,
And cost 20 times more like it’s my favorite candy in disguise.

.

There was a fine candy bar then that was called the Valomilk,
That had two chocolate cups filled with sweet cream like silk.
My Mom really liked this wonderful sweet treat she got in town,
That we sometimes had to search for as she hid them around.

.

There was a Planter’s Peanut Bar that was crunchy and sweet,
With just a hint of salt tasted when we all ate that sweet treat.
I loved this candy as it seemed to be made especially for me,
I still like them today, but my diabetes keeps me candy free.

.

When my Dad and I went fishing over to Kings Point on Grand,
Dad would buy me a quarter pound Baby Ruth bar for my hand.
This bar was heavy and it lasted me a very long time back then,
I recall biting it now and then with fishy smelling hands so thin.

.

I loved the Bit O Honey bar so very chewy with almonds galore,
That Mom loved too and she bought a lot of them at the store.
One good thing about this candy bar was it lasted a long time,
Extending my eating pleasure over a long period down the line.

.

The Big Hunk was white with lots of peanuts and very chewy too,
I loved this one as it was much longer that most bars of that goo.
I still find these now at times I am traveling out on the highway,
So I usually buy six or eight of them just to give them away.

.

My Dad liked the Mars Bar so we sometimes had them around,
With a soft white center in chocolate with almonds to be found,
So even though this wasn’t one of my very favorite back then,
I ate my share when I found them in the cabinet once again.

.

Mom bought those nickel Snickers bars occasionally to eat,
They weren’t my favorite but I never turned down the treat.
I did like them much better than spinach or hominy, for sure,
When Mom brought them home from the Phillips Grocery store.

.

There was one more candy bar I remember from way back then,
From a wrinkle kind of buried in my mind just uncovered again.
That bar was called the Oh Henry! which was such a silly name,
That I haven’t seen in a very long time that maybe lost the game.

.

Oh, and there was a chocolate covered peanut butter crunch bar,
Called 5th Avenue that I did like a lot when I was a young star,
I’m not sure whether this candy bar is sill around to buy now,
So I guess I enjoyed them then and they disappeared somehow.

PS: Pam just reminded me of another candy I did just love way on back as they lasted for hours of real eating joy that she loved too called the Slo Poke.
