Boy Toys, Then And Now

Boy Toys, Then And Now

.

Toys have changed considerably since I was a boy.
So I thought it would be fun to compare my old toys,
With boy toys my grandchildren are enjoying today.
My how they have changed in 65 short years of play.

I had an old pair of skates you strap over your shoe,
Luke and Zack ride Hoover boards barefoot so true.
Operating them with only their toes, zipping all around,
Standing up right while on their guitars they do pound.

.

I had a box of tinker toys with which I built trucks,
Ben builds with super complex sets of Lego blocks.
He has made everything from fast jets to the Bat mobile.
It amazes me how he puts them together, it’s unreal.

I had a big chief tablet and a fat pencil to work with then,
Zack is an expert operating the iPad with apps for him.
Luke taught me how to operate my iPad as I struggled,
I often gave him a hug to thank him for his trouble.

I had a homemade rubber gun that shot tire projectiles,
Ben uses a mean looking paint ball weapon in style,
To have paint ball wars in a group of young warriors,
What fun kids of today must have acting like soldiers.

For games as a kid, I played Tic Tac Toe and Old Maid,
Luke and Zack have super computers for their play,
Of all kind of action video games requiring lots of skill.
My what great strides we’ve made for the kids thrills.

We had an old black phone on a party line back then,
Ben and his friends carry their phones with them,
They are now complete mobile entertainment centers,
Keeping them busy in spring, fall, summer, and winter.

.

.

We had an old black and white TV with snow, I say,
Luke has a super large screen TV where he can play,
Video games or watch high def TV shows on the go.
From wireless signals flying through the air, you know.

.

I had a rock slingshot made from the branch of a tree,
Sarah is using a BB gun equipped with a scope to see,
So she is likely a better shot than I ever could be.
Standing there shooting off of that high balcony.

.

.

I made paper air planes that hovered about 10 feet high,
Ben has a drone that flys hundreds of feet in the sky,
Controlled by remote control held right in his hand,
He always brings it back safety when he wants it to land.

If the next 65  years brings the same kind of progress,
I can’t even imagine what the future will possess,
It has been truly remarkable what mankind can do,
I hope they focus some to cure the bad diseases too.
