Around Our Yard

Around Our Yard

Lots of things do go on around our Bartlesville yard,
Some are good and some are bad so be on your guard.
As I review some of those things from our past here,
Some made me cheer, and others drove me to beer.

A strange thing happened out back where squirrels play,
It had rained an hour as I went out to the car on that day.
Our large pin oak tree had a perfect dry stripe up the side,
And the other side had a perfect dry stripe just as wide.

After we moved in, the squirrel population went berserk,
And I had tried many different things that did not work.
Here I have a squirrel in my sights out the side door,
The beebees just bounced off their tough hide once more.

Later I bought a trap to catch that live squirrel meat,
Using sunflower seed bait, I mastered my own technique.
And I have now trapped over 350 squirrels here so far,
And hauled them far out in the country in my RAV4 car.

We have a Japanese Maple in our courtyard out front,
That the grandkids have climbed since they were runts.
One year they found a bird nest with two baby robins,
When the mom came around their heads went to bobbin’.

On our balcony rail, we found a red shouldered hawk,
Looking all around so majestically, as critters he did stalk.
Later we saw his mate flying with him out in the air,
And still later, there were two young birds flying out there.

Ben and Sarah were helping their Mom clean our gutters,
They dug up a small tree frog under the wet leaf clutter.
It was an ugly little thing, but they both loved it so,
After they played with it a while, they just let it go.

I was out in the back one day when I then did see,
A big gray opossum in the corner staring back at me.
I watched him for a long while and then let him be.
In two days I caught him in my squirrel trap with glee.

Every summer the wood bees show up to bore more holes,
In all of my large cedar home support beam poles.
I get out my bee swatter racket and swat them dead,
At a rate of 100 per day, that I hit very hard on the head.

The honey bees moved in on us and came in uninvited,
Over our back porch and in our den getting us excited.
We had the bee guys come and get them all out of there,
They said they were the biggest hives they’ve seen anywhere.

Kristi comes over and plants beautiful flowers each spring,
With her green thumb that to our yard beauty brings.
We always appreciate her help to keep our yard nice,
Ben and Sarah always help with flowers with their spice.
