A Bit Of Advice

When I was a young man, I was a somewhat introverted,
Just a bit on the shy side and perhaps a little convoluted.
This caused me to hold back not expanding my horizons,
Just standing in the shadows questioning my decisions.

A Bit Of Advice

I never seemed of above average intelligence to me,
So I had doubts on how successful I would ever be.
So for a while I stood back and let the world pass me by,
Just kind of hanging around looking up at the sky.

I could see that others in engineering were in the lead,
While I was hanging back trying very hard to succeed.
Then I started to see the light as I started to project,
To throw myself into my work, my own job to protect.

What was this thing I was missing before in my job,
That kept me way down often feeling like a big blob.
I thought long and hard to figure this out for myself,
Instead of leaving the answer laying on the shelf.

Why was I hired as an engineer in a field I knew nothing about?
After getting a Mechanical Engineering degree, no doubt,
Why was I hired to be a process engineer, I just couldn’t see.
Then suddenly, I finally began to understand completely.

Once you get through college and that degree you earn,
The companies are hiring your proven ability to learn.
They plan on teaching you new skills all your career,
You must be willing to learn each day during the year.

“Learn” has been defined as gaining knowledge and skills,
Which enhances our expertise as our minds they do fill,
So keep digging and researching every single day,
To learn more and more as you make your own way.

So I learned the technical aspects of my job well,
Continuing to work hard and to learn fast, do tell.
And I worked my way clear out of those dark shadows,
Into the lime light as an engineer who the answer knows.

Becoming an expert in my field of work was the result.
Respected by others as they requested my consult.
By continuing to learn as much as I could each day,
Never satisfied that I had learned enough during my stay.

Dig in there and learn the aspects of your job well,
If you find you don’t know the answer, research like hell.
Until you find the answer you have been searching for,
Apply it well, and you will become the expert once more.

Learning has become much easier now with the Internet,
With our personal phone knowledge centers we all get.
Questions can be answered by googling in an instant,
Anywhere or anytime with this knowledge assistant.

So heed the words of a wise old retired engineer,
And learn more each day to be respected in your career,
No matter what you do, learn, learn, learn and learn.
And a very good living for your family you will earn.
